Terms of use

Layers.City is free to use, and I'd like to keep it that way. These terms say what you're welcome to do with the maps, and what stays mine: the site itself, its code, and the Layers.City name.

In short

  • Use the maps as much as you like, for anything from finding your ward to planning a move.
  • Share links, screenshots and saved images freely, with the credit line on images left in place.
  • Don't copy the site, its code or its files to run another map, app or service, and don't use the Layers.City name or logo.
  • The public data behind the maps stays under its own open licences, so you can always get it from the original sources.
  • The maps describe; they don't certify. For anything official, check with the city or agency named on the card.

What's welcome

These terms cover layers.city: the maps page, every city's map and the place pages. Using the site means you accept them. You're welcome to:

  • use the maps for personal, school, community, journalism or work purposes, at no cost;
  • share links to the site, including links to a spot, a view or a place;
  • share screenshots and the images the Image button saves, on social media, in presentations or in print, as long as the credit line on saved images stays visible (it carries the credits the data licences ask for);
  • quote facts you find on a card, preferably with a link back.

What's not

The site's code, design and written content are © 2026 Nouman Khan, all rights reserved. That includes the tour text, the descriptions of places, the curated lists of names, landmarks and streets, and the way the data is chosen, combined and presented. Without written permission, please don't:

  • copy, mirror or re-host the site or its pages, in whole or in part;
  • reuse its code, page designs or written content in another website, app or service;
  • download its files in bulk, or automatically, to power another map, app or service (except as the original data licences allow; see below);
  • show the site inside another website or app as if it were part of it;
  • use the site in a way that overloads it or gets in other people's way.

Earlier versions of the site's code were published under the MIT License, and copies of those versions keep that licence. These terms cover everything added or changed since October 14, 2026.

Open data stays open

The maps are built from data published by the Cities of Toronto, Chicago and Vancouver, Statistics Canada, the U.S. Census Bureau, transit agencies, OpenStreetMap, Wikipedia and others. That data stays under its original licences, listed on the Attributions page, and nothing in these terms takes away what those licences allow.

In particular, data drawn from OpenStreetMap remains available under the Open Database License, and text drawn from Wikipedia under CC BY-SA. If you want the underlying public data, the best route is the original source: it's more complete, and you'll get it as its publisher intends.

The name and logo

“Layers.City” and the Layers.City pin logo are trademarks of Nouman Khan. Please don't use them, or anything close enough to be confused with them, for another service, app or map, or for any copy of this one. Mentioning Layers.City by name to talk about it or link to it is fine.

Accuracy

The maps are made with care from the best public data available, but they're provided as is, without any warranty. Data can be out of date, incomplete or simplified: boundaries are drawn from published files, road closures are permit dates rather than reopening forecasts, census figures are from the latest census or survey, and election details change. For anything that matters (where you vote, which school your child attends, whether a road is open) check with the city, school board or agency named on the card. Nouman Khan isn't liable for decisions made using the maps.

Spotted something wrong? “Report a problem” at the foot of any “What’s here” card writes the email for you.

Permission, contact and changes

To ask about using the code, content or name, or to arrange something these terms don't allow: go@layers.city.

If these terms change, the new version will be posted on this page with a new date. How the site handles your information is covered separately in the Privacy policy.
